Hello,

Canadian passport holder here. I have booked train 242 from Adler to Irkutsk next month and I have just noticed that there is a 44-minute stopover in Petropavlosk, KAZAKHSTAN!!!

Apparently Canadians do need a visa for Kazakhstan, which I don't have <yikes>. Is this going to be a problem if I stay on the train? Any first-hand testimonies out there?

Thanks,

YYT

was on this train last year 2014 .not a problem, no visa required for transitting, Kasakhstan boarder control checks passports and luggage while travelling on the train . you have to stay at your place all the time.

@h5n5:

Thanks for you feedback. However I note you are from Switzerland, whose citizens do not need a visa for Kazakhstan since 15 July 2014: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visa_policy_of_Kazakhstan. When exactly was your trip?

Independent from the transit issue, is your Russian visa single entry?

@paanwalla:

I have a double-entry visa, but both entries will be used up by the time I hit the Russia/Kazakhstan border: first entry at Sheremetyevo, then second entry at Psou/Adler after a dip in Abkhazia.

I think I will take the risk and chance it:

Another tidbit, FWIW:

RZD itinerary for the 242 train Adler to Irkutsk uses Moscow time throughout, even for the locations in Kazakhstan: Mamlyutka, Petropavlovsk, and Bulaevo. RZD standard practice is to use Moscow time within the Russian Federation, and local time in adjacent countries; I am inclined to take this as another hint that RZD considers this train to be on a domestic route.

Cheers,
