We're hoping to drive the Transfagarasan road in mid June. I've found lots of conflicting info on what dates it usually opens for the short summer season and I know it depends on how much snow has fallen.

Has anyone been there in mid June (around 15th) in previous years?

Any ideas how much snow has fallen there this winter and whether it's likely to open earlier or later?

Thanks v much

Parts of the road are open all year round, it's just the highest section that is closed during the winter.

As far as I know, in the past three years that section was opened in mid June (around June 17 in 2006, ~June 14 in 2007, ~June 13 in 2008) unofficially (=just a single lane was cleared, there still were roadworks etc.) - the official opening date is July 1st.

Thanks. Coming from the north, how far will we be able to drive if it isn't open right over the top? Can we get to Lake Balea?

If the top section isn't open, coming from the north you'll only be able to get to Balea waterfall; from there you can go to Balea lake by cable car.

Transfagarasan road is (officially) open from July 1st to Nov 1st. It is closed during the night.
