Hi,
this is my plan...places i want to visit in 2 weeks! Arriving in timisoara, late evening, then probably stay a night, then train. Does anyone know if it is necessary to book trains, and is that the best option. May hire a car somewhere along the way but not sure where, and is that necessary to book? Any advice would be gratefully received :) Thanks

There is a train from Brasov around 9.00pm in the evening to sighet in Maramures arriving around 7.15am. If you want a two bed compartment on the train you should book it otherwise there is usualy a couchette available. If you want to hire a car in Sighet there is only one outlet and you definitely need to book if you want to pick the car up from the station. The car site is at rentacarsighet.ro and they may need a weeks notice as they dont have many cars. If you want to get the most out of Maramures you should think about renting a car. An alternative might be to book a tour localy.

Hi,

If you choose the car you will have more freedom to move around and roads are better and better in Romania.

It is always good to book your seat, compartment in advance, although it is not easy in Central and easterneurope, as there are no online booking.

Check out train timetable : http://www.centraleasteurope.com/tickets.htm

Aron

You're referring to the Brasov-Sighet night train? Yes - but there's no direct day train and anyway you're going to see plenty of scenery in Maramures.

You can't book tickets from abroad, but you could book tickets for the whole trip (Timisoara-Sibiu-Sighisoara-Brasov-Sighet) as soon as you get to Romania, in Timisoara (either at the main train station or at the railway operator's CFR booking office inside the city) - but frankly advanced booking isn't that necessary.

Well you wil obviously miss some beautiful scenery but you might also save yourself rather a long drive on roads which can be a little hazzardous especialy at night. The train ride is beautiful and you should plan to get up around five and watch Maramures coming to life in the early morning.
