Hello,

My husband and I are travelling to Budapest on the 28/6/09, we want to spend a few days there and then take a train to Bucharest. I was wondering if anyone else had done this?
We plan on spendng a week in Romania, before travelling back to Budapest and we want to fit in as much as possible, has anyone had any experience of the day trips offered in Romania? We would like to go to Transylvania and the Black sea. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Amy.

We would like to go to Transylvania and the Black sea.

If you only have one week, the simplest option would be to take one of the several daily trains from Budapest to Brasov (a city in southern Transylvania) and spend the first 3-4 days there doing days trips to the many sites nearby (Bran castle, Rasnov fortress, Peles palace, Sighisoara medieval citadel, Sibiu etc. ).
You could also fly with the low cost airline WizzAir from Budapest to Targu Mures (it can be cheaper than the train) and then take a bus from Targu Mures to Brasov.

For the second part (Black Sea) it's better to go to the villages at the end of the Danube Delta: take a train from Brasov to Bucharest (check timetables on infofer.ro) , then a bus to Tulcea (schedules) and finally a ferry into the Delta to the sea, spending the last few days there.

Or you could head to the more conventional resorts on the southern part of the Romanian coast, but they're not very interesting (except Vama Veche, which is hardly a conventional place :-).

To get there take a bus from Bucharest to Constanta (schedule) and then preferably stay in Mamaia, though there are various other resorts south of Constanta that you could easily go to (most of the buses to Constanta mentioned above go on south passing through them).

You have many things to see in Transylvania, depends what exactly do you want to see. For medieval towns don't miss Sighisoara, Sibiu and Brasov. If you like nature you can go to Fagaras Mountains, the highest from Romania or to Apuseni Mountains, with many caves, quays and so well preserved countrystile life. Also, if it's interesting for you, here you can find many saxon churches, from which seven of them are counted on UNESCO World Heritage List. I advise you not to miss Biertan (near Sighisoara), Carta (close to Fagaras) Slimnic, Valea Viilor and others (Sibiu - Medias - Sighisoara road). We have also castles and fortress, the most interesting are Hunyad Castle in Hunedoara, Bran Castle and Rasnov Fortress, both near Brasov.

In my opinion, the romanian Black Sea coasts don't deserve the effort to be visited, there are not many things to see there, but if you want to go a better choice would be, as Ktack also says, to go in Danube Delta and spent there few days.

Good luck and have a nice stay.

Hello Amy,

Your trip project looks really good, Budapest and Bucharest are 2 amazing cities!
If you want to join Bucharest from Budapest by train, I advice you to travel during the night in sleeping car: this itinerary last about 14 hours... You can find schedule and other informations on this site:http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
If you are looking for day trips in Romania, you can have a look on this local travel agency site: http://www.romania-active.com/gb/ they propose trips in Transylvania, Danube Delta and also Bucharest, I travelled with them and it was great.
I hope my experience will help you. Good trip!

Yo
