Hi,

We need to drop out of the Schengen area for a few weeks so have booked a flight to Bucharest. I know February/March will be a quieter time in Romania, but I'm wondering if there is anything that is a "must not miss" during these colder winter months?

So far we've only booked our flight into Bucharest (18th February) and nothing else. We were thinking maybe 2 weeks:

Bucharest
Brasov
Bacau
Bucovina region
Cluj-Napoca

We enjoy nice architecture, the odd museum, but mostly a mixture of good food and local company.

I note the Youth Olympics are on in Brasov during our time there. Would it be worth getting to Brasov to see some of the events or are they usually packed out and difficult to get tickets to at this late hour?

Thanks,
Af.

Brasov and Sibiu, like at any time during the year.

You could do something like this:
1-2 days in Bucharest
3-4 days in Brasov (with day trips to nearby sites)
1-2 days in Sibiu
1 day in Cluj
3-4 days in Maramures
2-3 days in Bucovina

Hi ktack,

Thanks very much for the advice. I really appreciate it. We'll start planing out our trip and accommodation now.

We haven't planned to hire a car for any of this trip. Would you recommend it, or a local guide, for any particular city/region? We're keen to get a more local experience for part of this trip (even given the short time frame we're there for).

Thanks,
Af.

It would be a good idea to rent a car for Bucovina and Maramures, public transport to many interesting places in these regions isn't so great.
A guide wouldn't be absolutely necessary.

In Maramures you dont need a guide really you will be able to get a lot of information from the people who run your accommodation. In February its likely to be cold and theres likely to be snow at Cavnic if you fancy ski-ing. The villages may not be there usually lively selves but because the farmers have little to do in the winter the bars are likely to be busy. You shouldn't have to much trouble getting around the train usually runs and there are buss to Buchovina and Baia Mare.
