Hi,

Years ago I visited Brasov, Sibiu and Sighisoara and found all 3 of these places beautiful, ‘must-see’ kind of destinations. I also visited Timisoara, which I thought had the potential to be of the caliber of Brasov, Sibiu and Sighisoara but needed to be cleaned up before I’d consider it a must-see. In any case, I have never been to Cluj-Napoca, Târgu Mureș and Oradea. This is subjective, but do you think any of these are big must see kind of places (like Brasov, Sibiu and Sighisoara are) or more ‘only if you are in the area’ kind of places or nothing special? I appreciate your opinions.

All three are interesting (approximately in this order: Cluj, Oradea, Targu Mures) but less than Brasov or Sibiu.

I agree, Cluj is by far the most interesting of the 3. I would always put it on my list, but more for the atmosphere of this lively city than for its architecture or squares. But, since you say Timisoara, which I thought had the potential to be of the caliber of Brasov, Sibiu and Sighisoara but needed to be cleaned up before I’d consider it a must-see i don't think Cluj, and for sure TM and Oradea, are not your kind of cities...

I have been to Romania many times over a lot of years.
Brasov city has some nice parts but also a lot of delapidated tower blocks. Close by is Poiana Brasov which is nice. Some of Romania's highest mountains are close to Brasov by car, bus and train.
Oradea isn't that interesting, but very close to the border with Hungary, so there's the opportunity to do a day trip by train. Cluj is a good gateway to Transylvania. It's a big station with plenty of routes going off in many different directions.

Hi again,

Could you tell me the time durations from Oradea to Cluj and Cluj to Tirgu Mures and what means of transportation should be used? Also, how much time do you recommend in these 3 places to see all the sights and move along?

Are you taking bus or train, or both?

Whatever is more convenient and faster.

The buses and trains are generally quite slow in Romania. I've done both but don't really have a preference one over the other. The train between Oradea and Cluj takes between 3 and 4.5 hours depending on which one you take. Some services are direct and others require a change. Some of the indirect services are faster than the direct trains. Cluj to Targu Mures train takes about 3 hours. Bus from Oradea to Cluj is between 3 and 3.5 hours. Bus from Cluj to Targu Mures takes between 2 and 3 hours.

Use trains (but not Regio trains) on Oradea-Cluj and buses on Cluj-Targu Mures.
Spend a day in Cluj and half day in Oradea and Targu Mures.
