Hi,

We are planning on doing some winter mountaineering in the Fagaras mountains in march , I've researched the subject online but there is no substitute for local tips.
Can anybody recommend preferable routes for winter time , and should I bring my own gear or I can rent the technical equipment in Romania (e.g. ice axe , crampons)

thanks

I suppose you've already found this site listing trails in the Fagaras, with a note on whether they're dangerous in winter or not.
There are some companies renting mountaineering equipment.

All the higher areas will still have snow in March for sure, so you will need all necessary gear for snow, ice and cold weather. In Brasov, theres plenty of places renting all types of mountaineering equipment. A good 1-2 day hike to try out before doing anything more hardcore is from Cota 2000 station above Sinaia to Bran on the otherside of the range. The advantage is seeing the 'Dracula' castles in both towns on the way. If you're fit and get a early start, you can hike from Cota 2000 to Bran within the day, and overnight in Bran before going back to Brasov.
