Iam going for a long week end in Krakow next mid january and I wonder how bad is the snow at that time of the year.
Is it easy to walk around ? Do people carry with them light shoes to change when they get inside ? What kind of shoes is recommended knowing I have only cabin luggage in the plane.

There might be no snow at all, but if there is you'll be fine in the city center itself.
If you walk through side streets, there might be frozen snow/mud and it might be slippery.
Unless you plan to visit the opera, you'd be fine with low winter shoes/low boots with a rough sole.
I usually wear the heavy boots on the flight with another pair of lighter shoes in the hand luggage.
Poles usually wear appropriate shoes in winter, no matter the look. Women often wear knee-high boots.
At home or when visiting friends, you take off your street shoes and use house slippers which are usually offered by your host.

This is one of the best things about Poland. Even workers coming in to fix your washing machine take off their shoes. This level of civilisation requires clean socks, however.

well, it is arguable. That is correct that there MIGHT be no snow at all, but there MIGHT fall 30 cm in just one day, that's why it is reasonable to be prepared for the worst. It happened just a few weeks ago - the winter attack was so rapid the city was paralyzed. Travelling anywhere for a few days took several times as long as usually, with tramway breakdowns happening virtually on every line , numerous times a day, lasting up to half an hour.
Don't worry, the possibility of another so ferocious, all-out blizzard is very, very small, I just wanted to warn you that winter in Poland can be pretty tough, and this one seems one of the coldest and most snowy in this decade. So I'd advise a decent and warm pair of shoes .Who knows what the next month brings....
