I realise its not the the best time to visit Poland but my girlfriend and I will be around Poznan for a few days in mid January.

Can anyone recommend some nice town/cities to visit near Poznan, as we fly back from there after visiting Berlin.

Or is there enough to do in Poznan to keep us entertained for 3 days, if so what do we look out for?

We're not on a massive budget so cheapness may be the key. How much are trains out to maybe Bydgoszcz or Torun? ... apologies for any mis-spellings of the names.

thanks
Danny

Hi Danny
I've checked prices for you.
Train tickets (2nd class) from Poznań to Bydgoszcz: 27-35 PLN
from Poznań to Toruń: 23-37 PLN

I would recommend visit in Wroclaw, its only 2 hours by trian from Poznan and there is a plenty to see! Main square is really charming.

I agree with belgrano - you should go to Wroclaw. I was in Bydgoszcz briefly and it didn't seem like there was much going on. Trains are pretty cheap, but it depends to some extent which type of train you get. There are a few different train types, which makes things a bit confusing.

Having said that, Poznan's quite nice, and you can probably find things to keep you occupied for 3 days if you've got a guide book or some local knowledge.

Thanks for the pricing thats really helpful

I've been to Wroclaw before, I agree its very nice; but I'd like to try somewhere different whilst I'm around Poznan if you can think of anywhere even just for day trips.

Central Poznan is nice but not for 3 days. I'd head to Torun for 2 nights and a full day there, it's a fantastic little city. Nearer to Poznan, Gniezno is nice but the sights in the surroundings there (openair museums, steam train liones etc) don't operate in winter.

I agree that Poznan is nice enough (for a day or 2, but also agree that a trip to Torun is well worthwhile

There is a pretty cool castle not far from Poznan. I can't remember the name, but you can catch a local bus. Most of the buses are numbered, but this bus had letters (LP or something like that). Also there is a huge park in Poznan that has a great variety of cemetaries, including one that has many of the guys executed from the "great escape". But not sure how pleasant it will be to stroll around in January.

The two pretty castles near Poznan (not very old but still nice) are usually closed in winter - and certainly harder to get to by bus in winter, check with the tourism office first.
