I'm trying to find the best way (economical) to travel from Krakow to Ketrzyn (RASTENBURG).

Can anyone offer suggestions please.

ading that latter makes it ratehr more of a puzzle for most reading here-must some Deutscher who still thinks anyone speekee that?-then go to lonelyplanet.de-IOW it might have been much more clear to tell thats also a PL town.
thus the options are the same as anywhere:
1.cheapest=hitch or prearranged car share
2.the very few people who would even attempt it do it by pociagow=train, on the PKP website-and even bahn.de or bahn.co.uk will spew out the times-and changes needed
If I remember well-no map at hand-its a small town between Gliwice=west of krakow and Wroclaw-this route has trains ev 2 hrs or so-check yourself if they actually stop in that town

Take a train to Warsaw, if you want it cheap, use the slower pospieszny via Kielce (5 hrs, 50 zł) instead of express/intercity (3 hrs, 90-100 zł). Get off at Warszawa Zachodnia (Westbhf.) and change to a bus to Kętrzyn (dep. 8:00,14:10, 16:50, arrival 5 hrs later, 37 zł).

BTW, Kętrzyn is in the north-east of Poland, not in Silesia as bmta suggests.

igor is right, Ketrzyn (Rastenburg) is in north of Poland. Probably the fastest route is by train via Ilawa (one change, ~10 h). A little faster via Warszawa and Bialystok (~9.5 h). Its starting at 6.00 from Krakow. Ticket costs about 115 PLN. You can do it cheaper though Im afraid not in 1 day than. The distance is over 600 km.
