I used to drive this route via Krakow-Katowice-Wroclaw, which is a fine and decent road all of the way.

Now with the completion of the Warsaw-Berlin highway, there seems to be an alternative route via Lodz-Poznan which is a bit shorter. I believe the highway experience will be similar, but am wondering what the Kielce to Lodz road looks like. Did anybody drive along this road? In fact the route that google map shows does not go straight through Lodz but passes Lodz on a small road in the east (via Koluszki, Brzeziny).

I'd drive in winter, with two small children, so if the road via Lodz is somewhat rough, I'd rather take the longer way.

Michelin recommends a path through Lodz. Their map shows the Google route is on country roads.

Well, Michelin has three routes and according to them the route via Katowice, Wroclaw is longer but quicker than the route via Lodz.

In my experience the quality of roads in Poland can differ a lot, that's why I was wondering what the Kielce-Lodz road is like compared to say Kielce-Krakow (which is very good now). Did anybody drive this way?

The difference in time&distance between the routes via Kraków and Łódź is rather small - I would suggest sticking with the road you know well, especially when driving in winter. The road no. 74 from Kielce to Łódź is a national road, which means it will be cleaned from snow quickly etc., still it seems to be of lesser standard than the road no. 7 from Kielce to Kraków - e.g. it's narrower, with no paved shoulders.
