hi,

My girlfriend and I are going to be traveling in Georgia beginning mid-September. We heard the roads can be bad, especially in the mountains, so are thinking of renting a jeep. The problem is that neither one of us has experience driving jeeps. Are the roads bad enough that this will be a problem or can we avoid the really bad ones and still get to most spots?

It very much depends on where you want to visit. E.g. Kazbegi is fine in a regular car, Mestia should be fine too after road renovation, but e.g. Ushguli or Tusheti are impossible to get to without a good 4WD car. A rough planned itinerary of your trip would help very much in answering your question.

Main hazards in remote areas are erratic driving by other users and getting lost rather than difficulties of controlling a jeep.

Look at hire prices; as labour is cheap in Georgia its often no more expensive to get a car with driver than to rent your own car.

hi Igor,

Thanks for your help.

Places in Georgia we are considering: Mestia and Ushguli, maybe the north east as well. Kazbegi sounds beautiful and some more villages on the military highway. Possibly also Kakheti.

Apart from Ushguli, other destinations you mention will be accessible by a regular car.

roads in svaneti after renovation are fine, but remote places such as Ushguli or other places are bad, it is better to hire local drivers, if you decide to visit svaneti I will be grateful to be your host in Mestia, where I have hostel or guesthouse with nice conditions, if you are interested mail me on my e-mail xeiri@mail. ru.have a nice trip in Georgia.
