Hi,
To get from the airport to Prague take the 119 bus, costs a couple of quid and takes about 30 mins. Route stops at a metro station where you can get right into the centre.

The 119 bus/metro combo takes a bit longer than 30 minutes to get all the way to the city center from the airport. Leave at least 45 min to be safe.

As for getting from Prague to Budapest, you can take either a train or a bus. Both take 7-8 hours. You can see more detail on each option as well as pricing, etc on this Prague Transportation Guide. If you can get a Student Agency bus, that could be your best option. They are generally really nice.

We used the 119 bus/metro combination and bought a Metro day pass from the airport booth before we started. This really works out well because in Prague they are 24 hours passes as opposed to calendar days. That allows you to continue using them the next day. But buy your next days pass early in the metro since you could be off using trams or busses with no ticket machine in sight when the ticket expires. And the new one doesn't start clicking off hours until you validate it.

You can just get a 1 hour pass as that covers all forms of public transport (and lasts for 90 minutes at weekends). The 119 bus goes from the airport and finishes at Dejvicka Metro station which will then take you in to the city. Don't forget to stick your ticket in the machine to validate it when you board the bus.

I've only done the train in the other direction and I broke the journey in Bratislava, but the only problem I remember about buying the ticket was a horrendous wait for international tickets at Budapest station, which shouldn't bother you going from Prague...

Busses with a company Student Agency are the best option - fast, cheap and quite comfortable. It is possible to book the tickets in advance at their website, but unfortunately it's only in Czech. You can see the bus timetable at http://www.studentagency.cz/mainpage.php?switch=101307 .
You can also find train connections at www.idos.cz (I guess it's also in English now), but for trains it is not necessary to buy tickets in advance, you can just come to the train station and buy it there - I always do it like that.
Anyway, have a great trip!

thanks a ton ... I'm getting ambitious in my plans, now thinking of doing Prague - Vienna, Vienna for a couple of days, (lragely to take in a concert) and then Vienna - Budapest ... so, with all this chopping and chanigng, guess it's best to book once I'm there.

BTW, anyone been to the concerts at the Shonbrunn Orangery? recommended?

But I think will pass your kind invitation for a `piss-up'!

However, still very keen to visist the Crech Republic and Prague, sure the people there are generally wonderful! and equally keen to visit Vienna!

Dekuji!

#7 - Hmm, a pissup with lots of Gambrinus! I'll have to see if we can get over to Praha next year, and see if we can get a crowd together...
