I spent the last week end in Prague and saw a painting that, I found pretty nice and bought it.
The painting looks old ( the linen support is a material which isn't commercialized anymore in western europe anyway.
the painting has also been renovated.
the signature is pretty hard to read, apart the first letter which is a K and probably refer to the christian name of the painter.
my analyse of the painting in relation with my modest knowledge of the subject, let me think that the painting should be beginning of the 20th century or post world war one ( due to the topic) it doesn't look to be post world war 2)

my problem, I can't find a painter in czech republic on internet with a K christian name from this period (note the painter might have be only a student of this period in an art school)

the name might also include a A & a U but cannot confirm. on the back was printed this (what does this mean?)

Lira Ob.azové tiŠty a ram prevoz prof plane

Could someone help me, thanks.

If you haven't already, I'd suggest posting this query also on the myczechrepublic.com message boards, which are the best place for specific questions about Czech culture or art.

I don't think it's going to be an easy question to answer though. None of the really famous Czech painters from that time have names beginning with K, and Karel is and was a very common first name. Bear in mind also that at the beginning of the 20th Century the Czech lands were part of Austria and after World War I, Czechoslovakia, so your painter may also have a Slovak or German name, and that's if you're certain it was created by a local.

The print on the back is from the framing company; the part I understand means 'Pictorial prints and frames'. I think one of the meanings of the word 'převoz' is 'import'.

Perhaps it would help if you could take a photograph of the painting, post it on the interent somewhere and link to it. Even if people don't know the artist's name, they might be able to give you more clues based on what they see.

Good luck.
