Hello,

I am flying into Zadar on the 16th of June and will then begin my journey down the coast to Patra where I will take a ferry to Venice. I have roughly a month to do all of this. On my way through Croatia, I plan to stay in Split (see the islands... Hvar etc) and Dubrovnik. I'm on a budget, so hitchhiking wherever i can is ideal. Is this easily doable for a 22 year old Canadian male traveling solo? Any tips for getting around and accommodation in the country would be great!

I will post this in other threads as well, but if you have any tips on traveling through Montenegro and Albania (transportation/accommodation), that would be very helpful.

Thank you!

Here are several tips that might be useful:

  • From the airport in Zadar take a public bus and not a taxi to Zadar town center ( http://www.zadar-airport.hr/en/how-to-reach-us ). Keep in mind, don't step out of the bus at the main bus station, but in the old part of the town. Here are the times of departures of public buses from Zadar airport to the town on Sundays ( 07:00, 10:00, 11:30, 14:30, 15:30, 17:00, 22:30, 23:30)
  • As a Canadian, I suppose you will bring Canadian dollars with you (or any other currency, the rule is the same). Don't exchange larger amount at the airport because they have poor exchange rates. Exchange just a small bill enough to have for a bus ticket. When you arrive in town, it is the best option to exchange your money at exchange offices because they have the best exchange rates, better than banks!
  • Always try to get a room at the place where you arrive, this is by far the cheapest option for sleeping. You will see, almost everywhere, the offers concerning the rooms. Please, don't mix it with apartments because they are more expensive
  • You can, of course, try your luck with hitchhiking, but honestly, people don't like hitchhikers in general. I mean, the highest majority even don't think they could take one in the car. Anyway, it is true that several hitchhikers have reported their successes. As I have said, try and let's say, hope for your piece of luck.
  • Going south from Zadar toward Montenegro, I recommend stops in Šibenik (behind Šibenik there is wonderful Krka national park, well wort seeing with its lakes and waterfalls), Primošten, Trogir, Split... From Split take a catamaran to Hvar, from Hvar to Korčula and from Korčula ferry to Mljet island (this ferry has only two weekly departures, so it is good for you to know that departures are on Tuesdays and Saturdays at 14:00... From Mljet take a catamaran to Dubrovnik. When you explore Dubrovnik and the surrounding, take a direct bus to Kotor in Montenegro. On this section it is not useful to try with hitchhiking

These are very basic tips, but now you know the basis what and how to do.

Hitchhiking in Croatia is entirely doable, and waiting times are not even that long, but in the summer it can be a bit frustrating because you notice that so many of the cars passing you are jam-packed with whole families on holidayl leaving no space for you. Hitchwiki has plenty of tips.

If you want to sleep rough while hitchhiking, do everything you can to not be visible. The Croatian coast is one of the few areas in the Balkans where the authorities will hassle you. Rolling out a sleeping bag somewhere after dark is fine, but don't pitch a tent.
