watersports in the town

Hi there,
We are going to croatia soon and would like to know how easy it is to arrange to dive and waterski from split and dubrovnik. We are worried that these types of activities are mostly going to be based in the resorts out of town and since we have limited time we don't want to have to spend ages travelling and looking around for an operator. Any particular recommendations are also very much appreciated!
