Without going into a long story how can an Australian friend of mine get from Dubrovnik to Zagreb easily but not by plane? She has to leave first thing Monday to spend one day with a friend before returning again earlier Tuesday. What are the land options, travel time involved and approximate costs?

Unfortunately my friend only arrived in Dubrovnik last night so doesn't even have her bearings of Dubrovnik. When she looked at flights they looked way too expensive (350 Euro) so the question now really is how long travel time by land and what options she has – where would she go to get them? The poor thing has just travelled 48 hours - the plan was for both to meet in Dubrovnik for one day but that hasn't worked!

Thanks if anyone can help.

Taxi's gonna be the quickest option, but not cheap. There is no train service in Dubrovnik & it's a bit of faffing about getting to the nearest station.
Negotiate a fare before boarding the cab, that your friend & the cabbie both agree on & tell them to say there's no more cash available.
Make sure they have local currency, as Oz $'s or €'s will involve being ripped off on exchange.

Thanks lennythelion, I don't think she'll do that as money is an issue. It's good to know train is not easy. How many hours travel time are we talking between the 2 cities? Sorry I've never been there before and was just advised of the chaose this morning when I woke up (she'll still be asleep now - well hopefully after almost 48 hours of travel to get there in the first place). Karma doesn't seem to be flowing well with this trip!

This is from 2009:

You're asking 'Easily', but then discounting the cab option. It starts to become slow otherwise. The bus doesn't take forever, but quite a lot longer than a cab.
I have driven from Zagreb-Dubrovnik & it took, as far as I recall, about 5+ hours. I would assume a bus would be quite an unpleasant drag & according to several websites, including the 1 below, takes anything up to, & beyond, 12 hours.

As lenny suggests above..there are direct buses.Though I've never done it direct, only in smaller parts.

Its scheduled about 9-10 hours on the bus. There are both day and night options....

Thanks to you both for your assistance. Even though my friend traveled across the world to meet up with her friend, she has woken today and decided it is, what it is. Extremely disappointing but she's push through and making best of the situation exploring her beautiful surrounds of Dubrovnik. C'est la vie!

It's 400 km from Split to Zagreb and an additional 4.5 hours travel by road from Dubrovnik to Split. Afaik there is no train from Dubrovnik to Split. I travelled from Korcula to Dubrovnik last month and it wasn't too bad or congested.

"There are no trains from Dubrovnik to anywhere". Correct. Both from online searches and my own observations when I was there just a month ago. There is a train station in Split, but as the bus station is right beside the train station in Split it would probably be easier and quicker just to change buses.

The view from the museum terrace roof beside the cablecar terminus in Dubrovnik is nice and a must see: http://beta.trekearth.com/workshops/1498592/photo206815.htm
