Hi
I am looking forward to visiting Istria at the end of July - flying in to Pula and thinking of travelling down to Opatija by bus, staying in the region for ~one week.

Has anyone made that trip before and would be able to reccommend route / accommodation / things to see in Opatija and surrounding area?

Also, being high season is it still possible to get cheap private accommodation without pre-booking?

Many thanks in anticipation!

For me, Pula and Brioni are much nicer than Opatija. Try the Islands: Mali Losinj, Cres, Krk or Rab. http://www.losinjplov.hr/Default.aspx?PageID=800

We spent 10 days recently in Croatia and had a really lovely time. We found an apartment by the sea in Volosko, a small fishing villiage near Opatija with a spectacular view for a very reasonable rate.
There is an excellent bus service which makes it ideal for day trips around Istria and Kvarner, we even did an excursion to Plitvice lakes (a must see) it was a long day but so worth it.
You will find reasonable accommodation but it is best to pre-book in the high season, send me a PM and i will give you information on apartments.
