Hello,
Looking to plan a brief trip through Croatia to Venice at short notice, as I have about 3 weeks before new jobs starts.

Plan to fly into Dubrovnik mid/end October:-
-3/4/5 days in Dubrovnik - some day trips to Montenegro - (Mostar etc.,)
Travel up coast
-Split
-Zadar/Sibenik (maybe Plitvice National Park)
Trieste/Venice (3/4 days)

Travelling on a budget (hostels/buses) - I appreciate the schedule is a vague but not looking to overcomplicate things in view of lack of planning time or travel to difficult to get to places.. Interested in cultural/historical places - some (basic) walking/hiking if possible.

Would welcome any advice on intinerary - plan to use buses as appropriate up the coast - is this doable/ possible in 3 week period? Any problems travelling in October/November? (I understand the ferries start to wind down in September)

Thanks.

Take a brolly & winter gear.
Hardly strolling weather. It'll be chilly, wet & very cold after dark.
Have a great trip !

I have only travelled there in the summer time, so I can't comment on ferry schedules etc. but here are my general tips.
I think it's very doable in 3 weeks, most of the towns and cities in Croatia and Montenegro have lots to see, but are quite small and compact. In Dubrovnik and Split you could see most of what there is to see in two days, the rest of the places in only one day.
The Bay of Kotor in Montenegro could be done as a day trip from Dubrovnik, but I would spend the night in Kotor and spend one day in the Kotor itself and another in Mt. Lovcen NP. The drive from Kotor to Mt. Lovcen is extremely scenic, so a cap or other transport could be an option (I had a rental car). you can drive all the way to the top of the moutnain, where there is a mausoleum and aview point. However i don't know about the weather situation in October.

Northbound from Dubrovnik there is plenty to see as well. From Split I would suggest a day trip to Trogir, but there are other options as well.
I went to Plitvice on a tour from Zadar, which was convinient, but again this was in summer, so i don't know about availability. However I think Plitvice could be fascinating in autum, more rain = more water in the falls.

Transport wise busses are the way to go. However hostels are not the norm in this part of Europe, private rooms (Sobe in Croation) rules. From my experience in the summetime there were plenty of people at the bus stations/ferry docks offering rooms, however this might not be the case in October. You might have to find a tourist office or ask around at the bus station.

Hello Welshman 1
im coming from Split and i can maybe help you with informations.
First need to say that you an see many many free things for free. Ofc, some you will need to pay but in period when you are coming is post season so that parts will be or close or not that expensive.
For example, in Split you can see Dioklecijan palace, mostly for free, Peristil, or Sustipan,,,
If you move 25 km further from Split on way of Dubrovnik (bus ticket in one way is 16-22 kn , depends bout bus company) you will find Omis. Omis is really small but great city, surrounded by mountains, river and sea. A lot to see (heritage mostly) and lot to do (hiking, biking, zipline, rafting, canoeing, climbing,,,,)
Some thinks will not work, same as Split cause of "death" season overthere and if you ask for a night life- forget it :)Omiš is not for that!
but again further cca 25km from Omis is a bit bigger city Makarska; known as "night life city" but also a lot to see and do.
Perhaps; nature park Biokovo. 1764m mountain up "to the sky" :)
But you can reach it by car or hiking, biking,,, need to pay 50kn of entrence.
Near entrance you will find botanic garden (in case you like that stuff).
Top of Bikovo gives you AMAZING view on Croatian Islands on one way and on hinterland on other way.
And what i like the most; wild horses. But you need to be lucky to see them. Also, this part is the best in winnter when its under the snow but even now its great. If you decide to go, try to find sunny, cold day. And in case you will hike take a property shoes and lot of water :)
There is really a lot to see and do,,, if you like i can help you with info and directions. Let me know in private message with that :)
P.s. Sorry on my "english" :D

Take care!
Baky
