We have been thinking about a couple of weeks in Croatia / Slovenia in August, travelling from London. This guide to Pula mentions a train service from Pula to Slovenia. Do trains go to Ljubljana? I'm having trouble finding any information.

The train is not a good idea, it takes a day to get from Pula to Ljubljana, the bus service is a much better option. www.pulainfo.hr

There will be introduced a service by Slovenian railways which will connect most of the Slovene towns with Pula beginning from June 22. The train will depart from Ljubljana at 06:22 and arrive in Pula at 10:44. This will be very convenient connection, but please, I have to check with the Slovenian railways if this service will run on a daily basis or on particular days in the week. I will definitely update the information I have posted here as soon as I get exact data.

Here you can see the basic information about this service, but in Slovene language only:

I went that route last year. People in Pula told me the train sucked but I have no ideas why, it worked excellently. Just check out the time table here:

But looking at it myself now it seems like the train without transfers I took and went quickly enough don't run... Well, check it out for yourself.

I would recommend a bus definitely. It's faster and it's in better condition.

I have just received official update concerning the train from Ljubljana to Pula.

The train departs daily from June 22 until August 31 with departure from Ljubljana at 06:22 and with arrival in Pula at 10:44. Departures from Pula are at 17:55 with arrival in Ljubljana at 22:22.

On the route from Ljubljana to Pula or vice versa there is a change of trains at the station Hrpelje-Kozina, but it is only 4 minutes of waiting i.e. the Slovenian railways have created this route in the way that the train that goes from Hrpelje-Kozina to Pula has to wait for the train arriving from Ljubljana and vice versa, the train that will bring you from Hrpelje-Kozina to Ljubljana has to wait for the train arriving from Pula. Basically it is pretty straightforward.

As I have previously mentioned, the return ticket is 28.20 EUR and the one way ticket is between 23 and 24 EUR. It seems a bit illogical, but it is not in reality because the train is considered by the Slovenian railways as "bathing train" for Slovene public interested for a one day hop on the Adriatic beaches

I definitely consider this train connection to be by far superior to the bus connection especially if somebody is planning to go both ways (return ticket). It is more scenic, gives you a great glimpse of the local life as it passes through Istrian interior and it is more comfortable having more generous legroom. Ok, this is just my opinion, but I also like that the readers have complete and reliable information.

As far as the speed of transfer between the two towns is considered, the fact is that the bus is just 50 minutes faster. Nothing special to be a decisive factor.
