Hello there.
I haven't started looking at guide books yet, and was hoping to get some pointers from all you well-traveled people first.
My fiancee and I are heading to Ljubliana by plane, and then flying out of Split in Croatia 15 days later.
We were going to do a one-way car hire, but this looking very expensive, so we might just get the car when we get over the Croatian border. What I would like to know is how to make the most of this time- where would you visit between these two places?

Where in Southern/southwestern Slovenia is worth going to with limited time? And between Slovenia and Split?

Realistically we would probably like to visit 4 or 5 different places in our trip, and we'll be taking a tent. We'd love to see a variety of different places, with the beautiful islands and seascapes of Croatia mingling with the mountains of Slovenia.

so- suggestions please!

do NOT do a car unless you have zero fear that you will drive off a cliff one day. seriously, the ride into Split from Croatia is full of switchbacks the entire drive. if you really want a good time, take a night train from ljubliana to split. take a day in split, theres not much to see there. its really more of a port for the islands. take a ferry to Vis if you want some good relaxation. Plus there is a camp site on the beach on the town called komica across the island.

I do not know many places in Slovenia, except those famous ones.
But, from Ljubljana you can take a road to Novo Mesto, Dolenjska district, then cross int
Croatia across Jurovski Brod crossing.
Now, you're in Karlovac area, where I live - you can choose from a variety of countryside
places - they offer accomodation and domestic food. There is untouched area of Zumberak,
some 20 km from Jurovski brod (you can get info on the boarder or in nearby small town Zakanje)
and enjoy summer on 600 - 800 m elevation, in a traditional village of Vivodina.
After Karlovac, wou have famous Plitvice lakes, many camps there (best one is in Rakovica,
a nearby small town). You can swim and have some gastronomic time there.
Oh, yes, even some 30 km before it, you have Rastoke near Slunj, you can stay there in
historical mills on the river, very interesting for people who love scenery.
From there it is easy to go to National park Paklenica (a canyon), or to National park Velebit
(of you're into complete overwiev of northern coast islands and mountain forest scenery -
at the same time!
Also, Lika area offers many things - visits to caves, natural parks, fishing on Gacka river
(famous for trouts).
Do not rush to the coast - can be very interesting. In all places you'll find so many
printed prospects and guides for more and more... Just ask...and choose.

Transportation is not a problem here, buses are frequent, and you can rent a car everywhere.

Let the trip guide you, have a nice time...
