Hello. We are heading down to Croatia and surrounding countries as we are getting close to our 90 days in EU per the Schengen Borders Agreement. I have searched everywhere but no where can I find for sure if Croatia is part of Schengen yet. One site states "all EU nations except the following states". Croatia is not listed there. But the other website lists all countries in the Schengen and Croatia is not listed there either. I went to the American embassy in Tallinn to verify but they just gave me the same web sites I have been using. I have emailed the Croatian embassy to confirm but so far, no answer. Before I have to track down an actual Croatia embassy in the Baltic states, I was hoping someone was in Croatia and could tell me for sure. Anyone know for sure if Croatia is or is not part of the Schengen Agreement? Thank for your help. Happy travels everyone!

No they are not into Schengen area. They just joined the EU 10 days ago, so it will take a long time before they are in to the Schengen area, especially since countries like Romania and Bulgaria are not even in it, and they are EU members for 6 years now.
Just look on the internet at the website of the EU: http://ec.europa.eu/dgs/home-affairs/what-we-do/policies/borders-and-visas/schengen/

Thank you Matthijs. I just got the email back from the Croatian embassy and you are correct. They are not part of Schengen yet.

I'll be traveling to Zagreb at the end of the week so this is incredibly helpful, thanks. I got a snide comment from an immigration officer at the London Heathrow airport who laughed at me for not knowing that Croatia had decided to join the EU. I thought they had decided not to and I was in Africa so I didn't know for sure... But lucky for me they're in the EU but not the Schengen. Cheers!

Not in Schengen, and nowhere near joining it. But it still has the very generous visa-free regime it had prior to EU membership. Just turn up at the border and get stamped in for up to 90 days (if you're from a developed country). If anything, Schengen will spoil this scheme.

Unfortunately, Croatia has not joined the Shengen Agreement yet and still has border control on all of its border line. With bilateral agreements citizens of some other countries can travel with mutually recognized and accepted types of IDs. For US Citizens passport is more likely necessary.
