Hostels/backpackers in Split and Hvar

in split there is either the option of going to the tourist agency at the train station and having them find you a cheap room; or there are usually "old ladies" who will rent you rooms in their apartments. The latter will most likely be the case in Hvar. It most definitely is if you go to Vis, the most remote and independent traveller type island in that area. The "old ladies" are basically families/widows/etc. who will rent rooms to you for the equivalent of say 15-20Euro/night. Just be sure you know where you are going before agreeing to stay with them. They can hound you at the ferry/bus/train stations. Again, the tourist agencies (which are located at these stations as well) will hook you up with the "old ladies" more reliably.
