This summer, we will travel around Croatia and Bosnia for 3-4 weeks. For the first time in many many years we are stuck to travelling in July and August and we also have not been to the Mediterranean for a lot of years. Our usual way of travelling is booking our accommodation 1-2 days in advance, while we go around, giving us a lot of flexibility while on the road. From what I am hearing though, things do tend to get quite busy. I wonder how necessary it would be to actually book our accommodations way more in advance (say:now?), especially those on the coast/Islands? As we are travelling with our 3yo daughter, we are slightly more picky as to where we stay these days. It would be great to keep flexibility, but I also do not want to spend half of my travels online frantically researching the last available hotels....

Thanks for any insights you may be able to give!

Unfortunately because you may need to be a bit choosy with your accommodation I would really suggest booking in advance (yes, even right now). This would be for major cities in Croatia, the coast and the islands in particular as almost everything literally gets booked for these months.

You will not have so much of a problem in Bosnia as there are a plethora of accommodation options available for any budget, so this would not be too much of a concern and you can still have your flexibility on this part of the trip and book just a few days ahead.

Ye, I would definitely book, particularly in Dubrovnik and Hvar, if those are in your plans. I also highly suggest you take advantage of one of the great things about Croatia--that apartment rental is the norm and far preferable over hotels in most cases. In July, a lot of places will have a three-night minimum.

You are quite welcome, and thank yo for responding (so many don't). Please report back on how it goes. You hear such horror stories about high season, but I am sure it is not that bad everywhere. A first-hand report would be helpful--after all, a lot of people can only travel in summer and need tips.
