I want to get from Dubrovnik to Sarajevo later in July. Specifically since I am sort of a rail fan I want to take the Ploce-Sarajevo train. The DB site lists two daily trains: 6:05 and 17:00.

A few questions. Does anyone have recent experience on taking this train? How should I get from Dubrovnik to Ploce? Would any bus going up the coast stop in Ploce? Are there buses early enough connect to the 6:05 train? If I get there to make the early train would there be places open to change money into BAM? If not I hope there is an ATM in town. Thanks.

Trains are terrible, since you can't stop along the way and enjoy spontaneous items of interest.

I have traveled to 67 countries, always had a rental car (except in China Japan).

You should plan to stay in Mostar for a day on the way.

#1,
It seems that you like to pontificate when others ask questions. May I suggest that starting a blog is perhaps your best outlet in letting the world be aware of your wisdom.

#2,
Thanks for the reply. But I have been to Mostar already on another trip. I don't plan on stopping there and besides I don't have the time this time around.

I am sure there are ATMs. Try VISA.com or mastercard.com for locators.

What about picking up a rental car in Dubrovnik and then driving to Ploce? I suspect that this might be possible as the drop off would be within the same country and there is probably a demand for travel in the reverse. This would probably solve the problem of arriving to catch the 0605 train.

Also try using google.com or the Balkanology pages for something called the Dubrovnik portal which I believe has English language bus schedules from Dubrovnik.

buses run along coast, from DUb northbound to Split-etc, and ALL stop at Ploce-obviously. about hourly main summertime. also some nightbuses if you really aim for the 6.05 train-but you loose all sleep.. NO need to prebook trains, simply buy ticket, a few mins before. You can mostly also use cash euro in BiH-the KM, their money is equal to the old DEM=1 eur=1,95xx of them.(often simply taken as 2)

I took this train last year from Sarajevo to Capljina (just on the Bosnian side of the border), but not as far as Ploce. It's a very scenic trip between Sarajevo and Mostar. But the scenery from the bus is almost as good. I'm not sure if's worth fiddling with the change at Ploce rather than getting a direct bus, but if you do want to, then as bmta says all buses along the coast towards Split and beyond will stop at Ploce. There is nothing to see in Ploce itself, so not much point in getting there early if you go for the 17:00 option. An intermediate option would be to get a bus as far as Mostar and pick up the train there.

I'm not sure which town you meant when saying "I hope there is an ATM in town". If you are referring to Ploce, as it is in Croatia any ATM you find there isn't going to give you Bosnian marks. Presumably you can buy your ticket there in kuna anyway, so you won't really need KM until you get to Sarajevo, where ATMs are plentiful.

Thanks to everyone whreplied. After leaving on my trip I hadn't had time to reply. Our plans changed and we decied not to stay a night in Dubrovnik. I like the Montenegrin cost here and will stay a total of 6 nights around here. FYI Herceg Novi is a pretty nice town with a good mixture of a quaint old town an beach scene. Very little Westerners and tons of Russians.

As for the train I will likely take a bus to Mostar from here and take the evening train.
