We are a group of 7, representing three generations of a family (ranging from 75 year old grandpa to 4 year old grand daughter). We will be in Slovenia and Croatia for 2+ weeks in July/august and have almost completed our itinerary, but we have one gap and I am looking for advice. So far we have:
July 26 - 31 - Ljubljana (with excursions)
July 31 - August 5 - Zadar (with excursions)
August 8 - 11 - Dubrovnik

August 5 - 8 - we are not sure. We know we'd like to visit Split, but since all our other bases are in cities we thought it might be better to do Split as a day trip and then stay someplace else, smaller/quieter. I realize it's very high season so quiet is all relative. Vis has been recommended to us, but there are two issues: (1) we're having trouble finding appropriate housing and (2) we would then have to ferry back to Split and then take a bus to Dubrovnik. So my questions are:

  1. Can anyone recommend a source/site for housing on Vis that might have availability for 7 persons for 3 nights? Apartments or houses preferred.

2.Hvar has also been recommended, and it seem to be better for transportation down to Dubrovnik, but we are not interested in "party" atmosphere/nightlife. Is there such thing as a quiet part of Hvar? Suggestions for housing?

  1. Finally, we are open to any other suggestions of places to spend these three nights, either on the coast between Split and Dubrovnik or on an island. We would like it to be as quiet as possible and have housing that we could rent for just three nights.

Thank you for any advice! Hilary

Consider Trogir instead of Split and make day trips.

  1. I always found just doing an internet search with "name of town/island" and "apartment/villa rental" to do the trick. (I booked in advance after my first trip because I am coming all the way from the US.) On Vis I rented a place from the agency http://www.croatia-hotels-apartments.com/vis-island_croatia.htm.
It was one of my most favorite apartment rentals in three visits to the country! I stayed in Vis town but for a larger place you might check villas in more secluded spots on the island, if you will have a car.

  2. Hvar is an extremely large island, so you can certainly skip Hvar town, but yes everywhere will be busy (though I think only Hvar town is the party place) in July/August.

  3. Lastovo might fit the bill, but I was told it gets quite filled with Italians in August. http://www.tz-lastovo.hr/
Another area to consider is the Peljesac peninsula, or somewhere along the mainland like Brela or Omis. Perhaps the island of Solta might be nice, or a town on Brac (other than Bol), like Milna.
I have not been to all of these places, but sort of have a sense of which places are less crowded, in the off-season anyway.
    good luck!
