We are renting a car for our trip and looked on viaMichelin.com for driving times, but we're a little skeptical and we're hoping to get some real-time advice.

viaMichelin says:
Zagreb-Split- 4hr
Split-Dubrovnik- 3 1/2 hr

These times seemed very optimistic for high tourist season. We understand we may want to stop along the way for the scenery, but just wanted to get an estimate of what we're in for.

Thank you in advance for the help!

ANWB weet dat.
Yes ZAG-SPl is now a very fast motorway-even the bus takes just 4 hrs station to station (thus incl all the go out+in towns).
Along coast I doubt it with you for high summer seaon-but hrs dont say much to me-the real distance in KMS is far better-assume a max of 60 kms/hr (and then count lucky!) in high-summer along main coastal road+ add all stops/breaks

Just as a side note - there are road tolls, see http://www.croatiatraveller.com/Transport/Car.htm for more details

I made this drive in a rental car in May. The toll roads from Zagreb to Split are excellent and 4 hours is a good estimate. We actually skipped the toll roads out of Zagreb and headed to Plitvice Lakes Nat. Park - which I would highly recommend. Shortly after Split you'll get onto a coastal road where the going is a bit slower. Three and a half hours seemed like a good estimate to go from Split to Dubrovnik but there is a bridge out that takes you on a hour long detour. I don't know if that bridge work is done yet but be prepared - we barely made it in time to turn our rental in.
