Hi all,

I am traveling through Europe beginning August 3, but won't be arriving in Zagreb until the 9th. I want to explore the northern Croatia coast, after renting a car in Zagreb. I need to be in Split by the 14th, but not till late that evening. I was not planning on staying in Zagreb, but not sure if that is a good idea. So, that gives me five nights. I will be traveling with my girlfriend, and we both are into food and beaches. Any smaller towns, or must see attractions? I was thinking about avoiding Istria, but I'm not sure if that is a good idea. Is renting a car the most effective way to do this?

Any help is much appreciated,

Thank you

since you are into food, it's useful to know that the best Croatian restaurants are in wider Opatija area (small towns of Volosko, Lovran...). Istria is wonderful (not only the seaside - see Motovun, Grožnjan or dozens of abandoned old towns, eat at Livade, explore cape Kamenjak near Pula...) - with a rented car you don't need to avoid Istria but you can select the best places because of freedom you have. You can also go over the bridge to the island of Krk all way through Baška, a small town with a really great beach and wild scenery. On your way there (a small detour in fact), in the small town of Vrbnik you can do wine tasting and get lost in maze-like streets, and after Baška, you can check the town of Krk for some evening stroll in the island's 'capital'. Northern Adriatic has its charms.

You must see an explore this part of Croatia. Its only 150 km from Zagreb in the middle of Kvarner (near Istria)...
