We have recently returned from two weeks in Croatia. We loved the Plivice National Park. There's no need to stay in one of the fancy hotels within the park. Lots of nearby private homes rent out rooms or apartments. (My spouse has already sent information on to LP about this.)
The problem is there isn't any coordinated accomodations center yet. You have to ask around in town..
If you can swing it, do go to Dubrovnik - a truly beautiful city and well worth the effort. We went via the Island of Korcula. The ferry/bus service between Korcula and Dubrovnik only takes a few hours.
Expect cold water!
