Hi!
Myself and some aussie friends 25-32yrs old, are planning a trip to Croatia in August for 1-2 weeks. Don't know where is 'the place to go'. We are looking at finding a similar vibe to Selinas beach/Ibiza town in ibiza or Mykenos island, greece. -i.e. chilled out days with beautiful scenery, and some clubbing or bar options at night (without drunk lager louts!)
i'm excited about heading down the Croatian caost because i've heard it's breathtaking i just want to be sure we go to the right place!
thanks for any help.....also is it going to be easier to fly from London, or get a ferry from italy?
thanks again,

Basically you are looking for an Ibiza in Croatia without drunken louts...I guess Hvar comes kind of close. Most of the visitors tend to be Irish,Aussies, Italians and Germans, there are many drunken louts but its not by any means over the top. During the day there are possibilities of numerous activities. At night the bar/club by the coast is usually a happening place....overbearing at times. There are a couple other clubs, just ask the locals.
Dubrovnik isnt too bad for nightlife either.

When I were in Hvar it was packed with tourists, old tourists. But it's a very small place though. I'm not the partying type, but got up at 6 AM one morning, and noticed one bar closing down, and a handful of partygoers staggering back to their hotel after one long night. But as for Hvar being the new Ibiza, no way.

You can try the island of Pag, town Novalja. It's Zrce beach is known as a party beach with three clubs open 24/7. For some info and pictures click here.
I was in Dubrovnik this summer and had a blast. Definitely recommend it. Nightlife is more than decent, met a lot of different travelers from all over here (surprisingly it wasn't just Brits). To give you an example just in my hostel room there was an Aussie, a half Chinese Czech, a Guatemalan, and me, an American. The old town bars and clubs kick some ass on the weekends. Preponderance of Brit, Irish and Aussie girls, but surprisingly quite a few locals as well.
During the day we kicked it at the beach right across from the old town... It's small but fantastic! After a night of partying and a massive hangover the chilly aqua blue water definitely hit the spot...
Conversely, for an island experience go to Pag. The Slovenians told me it's the new happening spot. Lots of young people partying. They actually referred to it as a sort of Balkan Ibiza. And if this makes a difference to you (I know it did to the Aussie friend I traveled with & that's the only reason I mention it) you are statistically much less likely to run into other Aussies here than in Dubrovnik.
All that said, the Croatian coastline can't be beat so you are making the right call almost anywhere you go! Good luck with the trip.

If yo go to the Istra peninsula, Porec is really nice. A lot of nice places to hang out. Nearby, there's some clubs.
When I was in Istra (Vrsar) I travelled from Umag to Venice by ferry. Took quite a while but was really worth it.
I'm not sure if other ferries are available.
a friend of mine has relatives on the island of Krk and that should be nice to go to as well, but i haven't been there jet.
I'm actually going there this summer and I'll also visit Plitvice NP. Have been there and was it so beautiful.
Good luck!

I spent four hours in Rijeka and got the impression that nightlife there would be great. People try to get out of the place as soon as possible, me included when I was there. However, the next time I'm in the area, I'll spend a night there. We spent the night in nearby Opatija and liked it, but at night it was dead (granted, in October). The next day, in Rijeka, we saw lots of cool cafes and noticed some really nice nightclubs. It's a university town and there are lots of young folks all about, mingling with the older ones.
Makarska and its riviera are geared for beach types. It was actually quite nice and very friendly, even though you don't see much about it in the Thorn Tree.

I will also be going to croatia around that time and would love some advice on where to go...looking for same sort of vibe as Vicster.
Also, does anyone know the best way of getting to Istanbul from Croatia? I have heard about the Istanbul Express but can't find any specific information on the net (prices, length of journey, timetables?)
