We will have to be in Europe this winter, so thought of going to Croatia. Can anyone tell me what this will be like at this time of year? Do ferries run from Italy?
Thanks for any help you can give

Can you narrow down winter to dates?

Ferry info for one line: http://www.venezialines.com/eng/index.asp

Weather info for coast:

Web searching may provide other answers you require.

Croatia ferries

If you were thinking that it will be warm and sunny, think again.

.....to avoid being infuenced by the above subjective impressions, check any on line weather forcast site for average daily temps and weather conditions. in general, winters in Dalmatia are short and mild in comparison to continental Europe, so if your objective is not swimming but sightseeing that is not a bad time for visit. The only two year round ferries are from Ancona (IT) to Zadar and Split. In off season they run three times a week on alternate days.

dlmtn is right, you could do sightseeing in the winter but the other contributors are also right. Compared with coastal Spain or coastal Italy, Croatia is quite a bit colder in winter.

Not to belabour my point, but winter in Dbk is milder than in Rome, winter in Zadar milder and by far sunnier than one in Venice and so on. Now, winter in Sicily, one cannot beat that (but no bathing weather either).

Thanks for all the help, people, useful to have the temp comparisons though I wasn't really asking about the weather. Even us kiwis can imagine winter might be cold in Europe, everbrite. But really wanted to know if everything would be closed down and nothing running - esp as we have to go in early Jan which in NZ is the holiday period. Couldn't find much ferry info at all, like bmta said, sites don't seem to show sailings that far ahead. So info on ferry crossings really useful, thanks a lot all of you. Now we are thinking of going Bari to Albania and working our way up the coast, realise that's a different country but if any of you have any opinions on that I'd be grateful to hear them.

Unless you plan to visit Albania for her spectacular scenery, there are better ways to cross into Croatia. It is not clear would you be traveling by car. Anyway, the road infrastructure is fairly poor, as well the transportation possibilities: by bus and by air. Croatia Airlines flies Tirana to Zagreb three times a week. Regarding the ferry schedule, the last off season schedule gives you pretty accurate idea what it looks like. All inhabited islands are connected to their corresponding port on the mainland; the bigger islands several times a day. You will find accommodation in every town along the way (though less options), a few outdoor festivals, but all museums, historic sites are open to visitors. All of the above for much less money, at much better pace and shared by locals and a few tourist.
