Hi,

This September me and my pal are going to spend 12 days (Sep 4 - Sep 15) in Croatia on a landscape photography-oriented trip.
We'll have a car during the time.
Our target: show the most beautiful parts of Croatia in the best possible way.

  • Sep 3 - Land in Dubrovnik (very late, so we'll just go to sleep - then maybe not)
  • Sep 4 - Dubrovnik
    ...
  • Sep ? - Plitvicka Jezera
  • Sep ? - Istria
    ...
  • Sep 15 - Rijeka (Take off from at 23:00)

As you can see our itinerary isn't very well planned as we're still missing lots of info (although I read a lot of forum posts, none were photography-oriented).

Between the two dates above (arrival and departure) we'd like to see the most scenic parts of Croatia.
We'll definitely visit the Plitvicka Jezera (Plitvice national park) and some of the islands (which ones would you recommend?)
We'd also like to visit Istria - but have now idea where to go there

The rest is up to you, my friends - any info is highly appreciated, e.g.
- where to go?
- where to stay?
- where/what to eat?

We'd like to get up very early for the best photo opportunities, but I guess some places are just closed during dawn. Are some places open at weird hours?

Thanks a lot in advance,
Jean

Even though those past posts don't mention photography, I can assure you they still cover quite scenic places. I'll give a couple suggestions though. These are places I have had good results as an amateur photographer or just noticed them being particularly scenic.:
Of course Plitvice
The Peljesac peninsula around Ston in particular
Lastovo Island
Vis island
Diocletian's palace at night
If your rental contract allows you to cross borders, I would also drive down to the Bay of Kotor and explore Hercegovina.

Thanks for your suggestions - a recommendation from a photographer (whether amateur or professional) is probably the best thing I could hope for ;-)
As for Hercegovina I'm afraid it's still considered less than 100% safe for people not familiar with the area (and I guess there's enough to see in Croatia for our mere 12 days)

Note to all - naturally I meant Sep '08 ;-)

??? Never heard that, but yes you'll have plenty of time to fill just in Croatia.
Use viamichelin or a similar site to figure out your driving times. The problem will be how to allot your time, as it can be hard to leave Dalmatia in my experience, leaving you less time for Istria. If you stay in the south, you can take a ferry from Split to Rijeka (visiting Plitvice to/from Split). Or, you can drive northwest after Plitvice.

Are you referring to land-mines? That's really only a danger if you hike well off the beaten track. There are plenty of safe places to see there. However it's true that with only 12 days you will have to miss out a lot of places even if you concentrate on Croatia alone.

As you not finilized your itinerary and are planning to go to Dubrovnik, I suggest you includethe islands of Mljet and Korcula. I just came bach two days ago and had a gorgeous time there

Thanks, I'm considering these islands (as well as Hvar).
Are they photogenic in your opinion?

And another question - what's the best place to relax (possibly on a beach) for a day?
Maybe some island?

I would also highly recommend taking in some of Croatia's beautiful islands - we visited four on our trip and there were a lot of photo opportunities. Try Locrum for some nice views back at Dubrovnik, Korcula, Hvar, and Bol and Zlatni Rat on Brac. Here's a link to some of the photos I took - http://picasaweb.google.com/sltbiz/Croatia

The May Day pictures (with the flags) are what Dubrovnik looks like very early in the morning with empty streets. Other highlights for us were Krka NP, Primosten, Diocletian's Palace in Split, and a quick sidetrip from Zagreb to Ljubliana. It's all good!
