We are 2 girls travelling across croatia and we want to visit the Plitvice lakes but arent sure whether we should do it in a day visit between Split and Zagreb or if we should stay the night before we go around the lakes if it will take us a whole day?

Has anyone got any advice on how long it will take to go around the lakes or places to stay that are close by and on budget?

Thanks

The best way would be to do upper lakes in the afternoon, spend the night, do the lower lakes the following morning....or the other way around. To do both the upper and lower in one day is doable but the point should be to enjoy the nature not just run through.

It will take around 275 km or 3 hours from Split to Plitvice, and around 3 to 4 hours to see the lakes, and then another 2 hours from Plitvice lakes to Zagreb. Maybe it is not necessary to rent any accommodation on this way. Hope this helps.

The question is "how much time do you want to spend at the lakes?" If you want to see the lower lakes and falls you can visit on the way between Split and Zagreb, and spend 3 hours or so at the lakes. If you want to take in more of the area then you will need to spend the night somewhere close by.

We recently visited the lakes on the way from Split to Zagreb, with a stop in Sibenik: recognising that we were going to have only a brief time there we were still able to spend enough time to take in the lower lakes.

We need to go back with more time.
