I am traveling to Croatia for 2 weeks in early August and im wondering if which regions/islands to focus for the best beaches accessible via ferry without too much traffic. I am interested in Mljet and Pag but I am not very familiar with the coast yet. Thanks in advance for any help.

Early August is super high season everywhere in the Mediterranean. Both Islands have some sandy and a lot of pebble beaches. Most of them may be either full or crowded.

im now looking into vis/bisevo and kornati archipelago. Also for the sake of comparison how crowded is maddalena archipelago in early August?

In the north of the Adriatic I suggest u the island of Cres. Many quite places and little villages (beli, valun, martinscica) . the whole island is 415km2 and just 3000 ppl live on it.
Pag is busy .
Central Adriatic islands r pretty and not so popular with tourists like all other so try Dugi Otok or Silba.
Vis is fantastic.
Mljet def very quite (950 inhabitants only), green n magical.
Enjoy!

I can confirm that Dugi Otok and Cres are not very crowded even in high season. Mljet also.
