Hiya, Im planning on taking a trip on my own to Sharm el Sheikh to complete my open water dive course, probably with the Red Sea Diving College as i have heard good things about them, and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on where to stay? The college website recommends the Kanabesh hotel but i have read some pretty poor reviews about this place so Im open to any suggestions anyone might have, especially ones good for single travellers who want to meet up with other people :)
Thanks!
Em

Any particular reason you're going to Sharm? An hour and a half up the road is Dahab which is much more laid back and geared towards diving, It's also better for single travellers and the diving is very easy - walk into the sea and you're on the reef within about 20 metres
I'd recommend Reef 2000 to train/dive with but not their hotel - Bedouin Moon - as it's not that great. There are loads of other hotels though - Penguin Village gets good reviews, or Google Dahab and take your pick. I think as a single traveller you'll have a better time in Dahab than you will in Sharm
Eya!
I'm heading out to Egypt in mid-March. I've also been advised to stay in Dahab for my dive as I'll be traveling alone as well. Found some good options, and am already in touch with a dive instructor :) When are you heading out there?

Sharm has so many hotels that it shouldn't be hard to find something nice on a small budget.
My first advice is to check the major hotel chain websites. A few years ago I booked the Hilton Sharm Dreams for $40 US per night. It was a web special that was paid in advance.
Another recommendation is to try one of the British travel agencies such as Regal or Crusader. They have very good deals including charter flights. It's probable that you can book hotel only. My guess is that these companies buy in bulk.
Do check out ratings on tripadvisor.com.
Dahab is certainly a more laid back place. It's also less expensive. In my opinion many of the dives are better than the "local" sites in Sharm. That said, once you have enough dives you should experience the big dives that Sharm is famous for. The Shark Reef at Ras Mohamed is truly world class. If you go during the summer you can see a massive school of snappers.

Thanks everyone, this is really helpful! Im now thinking Dahab maybe the way to go...
wershwie: Im thinking about going in May. You already have a dive instructor, impressive! Dont suppose you fancy spilling the beans on them do ya? :)

Definitely go to Dahab, not Sharm, if you are travelling solo. Fantastic, laid back place, and you will definitely meet other solo travellers. Bedouin Moon is quite a long way out of town, so I'm not sure it would be my first choice for this reason. I dived with Sphinx Divers and I have no complaints. I've also heard good feedback on Bedouin Divers. Don't worry about booking in advance - you will definitely be able to pick something up when you get there - there are about 60 dive shops!
