Does anyone know of a dive shop in Amed where I can do unguided shore dives, just hiring tanks and weights?
My initial research has suggested that there is diving available straight from the beach as well as by boat.
Cheers

Sorry, can't help you with Amed, never dived there, but I know in Tulamben the shore diving is excellent - in my opinion the Liberty Wreck there is one of the best shore dives in the world and you can do it unguided. Just do it either before 9AM or after 4PM or you will be sharing it with loads of day-trippers, unless you're there off season. It's absolutely worth staying overnight (or 2 or 3) to be able to do this. Seraya Secret is also an amazing shore dive that you can do unguided no problem. It's for muck and critter diving.
Are you talking about doing solo unguided shore dives? If so, some of the places in Tulamben will let you do this if you have an instructor cert.

Agree with above, Tulamben has amazing shore dives, Liberty Wreck, Coral Gardens, Drop Off etc. and I know at least one diveshop there which will allow you to hire tanks only and dive unguided as often as you like. I did about 10 unguided dives there just on the Liberty Wreck and often had it completly to myself, especially early in the morning. But I do have OWSI cert.

I know that Liberty Dive Resort allows it.

I was once told that any shop that is a PADI Dive Centre can't allow solo divers without risking loosing their PADI membership.

Firstly there is a big difference between unguided divers and solo divers.

Secondly, there is no PADI requirement whatsoever for all divers to be guided or in buddyteams. A PADI divecenter claiming otherwise is just trying to sell some guided dives in stead of renting out gear only.

Thanks, Steve. I didn't know if it was a true statement or not.

I was actually told that by a PADI instructor in Indonesia. He said that was one of the reasons (among many) that there weren't heaps of PADI shops in Indonesia.

Knowing how the unpredictable currents can catch out even the most experienced of divers, I personally would not do any unguided dives in Bali waters, even in the relative calm of Tulamben, and I'm an Instructor who has dived Bali for 4 years straight.
