The IDC. Ko Lanta, Ko Lipe, Ko Jam?

Hi everybody,

I'm a DM (presently diving the cold waters of Canada) who wants to do the IDC this winter (far away from the cold water). I think Ko Lanta, Thailand might be the place I want to do it. I am curious about Ko Lipe and Ko Jam as well. I did my open water course in Thailand (Ko Tao) about 8 years ago and I've done most of my diving in warm water. I'm hoping to do the IDC and then work for a few months.

I'm wondering, what shops offer the IDC? Also, how often do the courses run? Is there an IE every month?

All details and words of advice are appreciated.

I was just reading another recent post. I read that Railay has a few dive shops. Is it possible to do the IDC there?

AFAIK, there is no IDC on Koh Lipe.

As far as Koh Lanta goes, there are several. Some IE's are held on Lanta (depends on the month), and when there is no IE on Lanta, they tend to go to Phuket, I believe, for the IE.

IE's are held virtually every month on Phuket and on Tao.

My advice is to check the dates, figure out which island you'd like to go to, and just show up at least a week before the IDC and meet the Course Directors. You may find that you click with one of them more than the others, which will help that CD become a lifelong mentor to you.

There are various stores on Koh Lanta that offer IDC's, amongst others Blue Planet Divers and Scubafish.
PADI IE's are only held twice a year on Koh Lanta, as already mentioned here, if there are other IDC's scheduled, the candidates tend to go to the Phuket IE's.

There are no IDC's in Krabi /Railay as far as I know.

Scubafish has an IDC starting this coming 27th October, that might possibly be a bit early for you.

I emailed Palm Beach, Scubafish, and Blue Planet. So far Blue Planet responded and said they do the IDC twice a year. October and March. I'll be heading there end of November. I hope the other shops are offering more IDCs.
