Hello, I am looking of a fun and different vacation this summer( with Scuba Diving). I have 3 or 4 weeks in August. I would like to do a backpacking trip but I am not really sure where....I will be going with my girlfriend. SHe has already done a few backpacking trips ( I have not, this will be the first) She has been to Thailand already, so if it is possible I dont really want to go there.....but it is not out of the question. We are looking for a place to do some Really nice diving at the same time. I was looking for something cheap and fun. Does anyone one have any idea's ???????
flog, will you be starting out in Canada? The cheapest options are going to be in Central America/Mexico. The "backpacker highway" is prominent there.
In SE Asia, for budget travel in August, leaving out Thailand, you could spend some time on the east coast of Malaysia, diving off the various islands of the Terengganu Marine Park, and then make your way to Borneo for some diving at Mabul/Sipadan and some interesting land-based touring. From there, get on over to Bali. You can dive with mola-molas off Nusa Lembongan, and also up at Tulamben to dive the wreck of the Liberty. And of course Bali is great for touring.
That should easily take up 4 weeks!

Bali is great for diving in the summer- especially if you are after the mola molas! There are lots of cheapish places to stay and from here it is easy to hop over to the Gilis which is a backpackers paradise!

Quero, Yes we are leaving from Montreal, Quebec. What is the Liberty? I am guessing that it is a wreck, what else? I am sorry I havent really had the time to sit down and look where to go yet. Work is a little bit crazy right now.
Thanks lot !!!!

Hello DiveDoll, Yes Bali is also an option. What is the Mola Molas???? And the Gillis... Backpackers Paradise Hmmm. I wil look it up!!!!!
flog, as I mentioned in my response, yes the Liberty is a wreck. It is stunning. It's so near shore that the dive is conducted as a shore dive by the nearby ops. The shallowest portion of the wreck is about 5 meters underwater, so it attracts snorkelers, and of course a lot of marine life. The deepest portions are at about 30 meters where ship rests on the bottom. The wreck is home to such gems of marine life as frog fish, pygmy sea horses, cuttle fish, groupers, barracudas, etc.
I also mentioned the mola-molas off Nusa Lembongan (you rarely see these from Bali proper, so you either need to do a daytrip to Lembongan or stay on the island and dive from there). Mola molas are also known as 'ocean sunfish' or in some languages as 'moon fish'. They are nearly round with dorsal and ventral fins extending far above and below their bodies. They have essentially no tail, just a stub. They are the largest bony fish in the ocean and while they are common in the oceans, they don't normally appear in shallow water where divers play. In the late summer months, though, they aggregate near Nusa Lembongan, so this particular destination has become something of a 'must dive' for serious divers, some of whom make special trips to the area just to dive with these creatures. You will be in the area by chance at the right time of year, so you might want to take advantage of this.
Feel free to send me a PM if you want more detailed information.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks lot. It seems really cool. My girlfriend and I just looked at a few videos on youtube. The Mola Mola Is HUGE!! It might be very cool to go diving in the area when we come. I mean if we are going to be there at about the right time too, Why not !!! I will also look the the Liberty Wreck too. As I am sure it is something to see. Hey Thanks alot for all the info.
Are you from around there? Have you been there? Do you have a dive shop?
