Hey guys,

One of my top things on my bucket list would be to Scuba Dive, I was in Australia last year and went snorkelling on the great barrier reef but unfortunately did not dive because I was too scared. I keep thinking about a shark swimming near by and having a panic attack. Anyone have some advice for someone scared of diving? It would be greatly appreciated because next time the opportunity comes up I don't want to pass it.

Lauren, get a private instructor who will patiently give you as much time and attention as you need, and will coach you past your fears. I have just certified (today) a student who sounds a lot like you. I spent 9 hours with her in the pool before going to the ocean so that when she did her first open water dive she was confident enough to descend and dive very competently.

Good advice certainly...

Years ago I didnt feel comfortable snorkeling either but its amazing how different a perspective it is to be underwater 'amongst it all'.

Take it slow and give yourself time and dont put too much pressure on yourself !

Good luck!

That advice was exactly what I needed. I will be sure to do that next time I decide to go on a trip. Thanks so much!

have you consulted a psychologist? fear is the mind killer (& the prime motivator of most human behaviour)

Grace, you are definitely not alone! I've certified many divers who thought they were too scared to ever actually dive. To be honest, when I first began diving I was a lot more scared than I expected, but now I train dive instructors in addition to divers! If you don't feel ready for the full Open Water course, most dive centers offer a "trial dive" called a Discover Scuba Dive experience. It's not a certification course but is a good way to get a feel for being underwater. However, don't write yourself off of doing the Open Water certification course- you practice diving in a pool or confined environment to become comfortable and confident with the equipment before you do any open water dives, so you will have lots of time to familiarize yourself with diving.

Whatever you do, just know that you are not alone! It's a common feeling to be scared, but with a good instructor you will be able to face your fears. Also, just so you know, even if a shark did see you underwater, he'd be a lot more scared of you, than you would be of it :) I've taken many people diving with sharks, and all of them are amazed and thrilled at how beautiful and timid they are!

Happy diving :)
