My buddy and I have booked tickets to Cairo for two weeks at the end of the year so we can do a couple of days of sightseeing and then dive the Red Sea.

We each have about 40 dives under our belt, so we've had some experience but we're not super advanced.

A liveaboard in Sudan for one week sounds great, but I've had a hard time finding information. Does anybody have any thoughts or experiences they can share? We really want to do Sudan, but if it's too difficult, expensive, dangerous, or otherwise not a good option, then we'll probably stay in Egypt.

Thanks!

Hi there,
I dived Sudan in 2006.You can do it by liveaboard only,so it doesn't come cheap(2200eu.flight included from Italy. The visa is around 160US$).
It's great diving, not particulary difficult and you have almost a year to build up some more experience:-)
I don't think it's that popular with American divers(too far away).Try some British operators.
It's not dangerous, you're in the middle of the sea and no pirates afaik(but you might experience some bad encounters further south...much further, don't worry)but you're certanily very likely to meet up with a few sharks......and Port Sudan airport is crap, expect to wait a couple of hours or more to collect your luggage with Sudanese pushing and shoving.
Oh,and bring some anti-diarrhoea tablets.

Thanks, Brenno. That's very helpful. It sounds like it would be amazing. It's not cheap, but that price point isn't out of the question for us.

I've looked and haven't found many operators via google. If anybody can recommend one (or more) I'd be eternally grateful!

Have a look here:[http://amrnour.com/sudan-elegente.html]
The San Marco is the boat I was with.Mind you,the pictures are just the other way 'round.I'm not advertising,it's just to give you a rough idea.
Strange you cannot find operators with google. If you find one you just need to sort out a flight to Port Sudan from Cairo, you can do that during your stay there.
Cheers
