Hola amigos y amigas!

I am new to the forum (and diving), but this seems like the right place to look for inspiration! I study International Hospitality Management and will be doing a three month internship - followed by a two month summer break. I'm trying to figure out where to go..

By now I have narrowed it down to Asia, most likely south east Asia. Great diving is the most important criteria. I wont be able to do liveaboards so I want the diving to be somewhat close to the shore, or within reach of day boats. I'm a fairly inexperienced diver having done my PADI rescue less than two years ago and logged a little less than 100 dives. If possible I'd like it to be somewhere I can pick up surfing (preferably kite or wave). I am hoping to find somewhere that's not too touristy, yet not too remote.

Economy is also an issue as I'm budgetting around 1000 USD a month. This is one of the reasons I've narrowed my search down to south east Asia. As I will most likely be working in a hotel or hostel I hope having food and maybe accommodation paid for. I'll be leaving Denmark in late March or early April. After the internship I was thinking of backpacking the surrounding area for a couple of months.

Do you have any ideas? Every suggestion is greatly appreciated :)

Oh, I love Tulamben, but the fact is that there's no surfing there....

True, you are "surfboy", and you show a surfer in your avatar, so you should know, and I guess "nearby" is rather relative. But for me, the distance is significant--it's at least a three-hour drive from Tulamben to Kuta....

We also have some summer surfing in Phuket (and a little tournament even), but from what I can tell, the surfing sort of sucks, so I didn't even mention it. You can surf and dive at a number of places, though most have a drawback of one kind or other either with diving or surfing.

Another place that comes to mind is Nusa Lembongan in Indonesia, which is quite near Bali. Both surfers and divers stay in the same village, so no transportation issues are involved.

Guess the OP will have to decide whats more important, surfing or diving hehehe
Not that many places where you can do both in close proximity? but maybe somebody knows better .....

Think about surfing and diving around Lombok, Indonesia. The best waves you will get at the south of Lombok, Gerupuk, Dessert Point. Diving in Lombok is also great. The south you will have nice divesites. but if you want to combine nightlife and diving visit the Gilis. Around Gili air are 2 surfspots, not always waves but they can be good....

Hello danieljohansen:
Luckily, life is a compromise and there are places where you could do both diving and surfing.
(i) The south coast of Sri Lanka is OK for wave surfing plus diving if you are comfortable with u/w currents. Locations: Unawatuna, Mirissa, Madiha.
(ii) The Gulf of Suez is OK for kite surfing plus excellent diving. Locations: El Gouna, Hurghada.
Start from our travel notes and then dig a bit deaper.
