So, let them be fishermen and go with the cards they were dealt with, and don't let them try to be anything else by turning wild creatures in into things that turn up at a certain time tourists to see....................................Any excuse you may offer, i see as very wrong, very wrong indeed.

oh, really strauss, you would prefer that they hunt the whale sharks & eat them

either way, the whale sharks will not be "left alone". one way, the whale sharks will live, the other way, such as you propose, the whale sharks will die

And who in the earth is saying that they should 'Hunt them and eat them'?

historically fishermen in the philippines hunted, & ate, whalesharks. in recent times they have learned that the whalesharks offer greater value as tourist attractions.

they have never been "left alone" as you suggest.

are you aware that "nature's scheme" involves creatures eating other creatures? check it out sometime. humans have hunted many species to extinction

Why do you talk about things that have very little, or nothing to do with what i am talking about?......................My premise is very simple, and it is just let them be!

In doing some reading about what you maintain, i find that what you say about fishermen 'Historically' hunting and eating Whale Sharks is ablsolute rubbish and completly untrue. It seems that the fishermen used one man out rigger canoes to fish by hand line, and used to push the creatures away as they tried to eat the bait that was shrimp the fishermen used.........................Hunting and then eating them is absolute crap!!

it is du riguer for scholars to cite their sources strauss. would you care to reference your research material
here's a reference may may care to read

The whale shark is targeted by commercial fisheries in several areas where they seasonally aggregate. The population is unknown and the species is considered vulnerable by the IUCN.[2] In 1998, the Philippines banned all fishing, selling, importing and exporting of whale sharks for commercial purposes,[21] followed by India in May 2001,[22] and Taiwan in May 2007.[23] They are currently listed as a vulnerable species; however, they continue to be hunted in parts of Asia, such as Taiwan and the Philippines.

Ernesto is the only person I know that was a whale shark hunter - met him on the Pintuyan Peninsula in southern Leyte.

there is a picture of what a whale shark harpoon looks like - in the hands of Ernesto - a preacher now ha ha

blog page from 2009

http://www.dutchpickle.com/philippines/leyte/whale-shark-spotting-in-southern-leyte.html

he says he was converted after he had harpooned a whale shark ( that he had a buyer for in Bohol ) - the shark sounded and Ernesto got the line tangled around his ankle and was dragged into the depths - anyway to make a long story short he got free of the line and quit hunting the whale sharks

Sogod Bay is crystal clear and a pleasure to dive!
