Freediving

Interest forums / Diving & Snorkelling

Hello,

We are planning to take 4 months off next summer and go travelling. We haven't decided where to yet though! We would like to do some freediving courses while away (I have done a beginner's and my husband has done an advanced course on Koh Tao in Thailand).

Our ideas so far are to either
1. return to SEA (in which case we know where to go- Koh Tao)
2. travel to Africa
3. travel to central America

Does anyone know anywhere to Freedive in those parts of the world or do you have suggestions fo places we havent thought of?

As we are away for 4 months we are thinking of heading somwhere with a lowish cost of living while we are there, though we know the courses may cost several hundreds of pounds to do.

Any advice is welcome,

Cheers.

Dahab, Egypt is well known for free diving due to the depths and good conditions. They hold many competitions there. It would also fit in with your requirement of having a low cost of living. Take a look at [www.freedivedahab.com] It is run by a couple of freediving champions. I think Desert Divers also run freediving courses [www.desert-divers.com]

Hi there!

During my travel across the Asia, I went for few days to Koh Tao, where I've been before few years ago. And I discovered a very good freediving courses in there. This freediving school was based in Dahab since few years but now they moved to Koh Tao. And it is the only freediving school in Koh Tao, who provides international certification with Aida and SSi. But besides certification their course is based on the very good theory part, provided by these diving associations! And, most importantly, instructors are just amazing! Here is their address [http://www.blue-immersion.com/index.html]

There is another spot in SE Asia for Freediving.
Freediving-Philippines in Moalboal, Cebu.

Hello,

I am a freediver as well, and travel every year to go train in various spots - just finished a 5 month holiday (including Freediving in egypt and the philippines).

I never went to central america so no idea where you can train there.

If you go to Africa, you should definitely go to the Red Sea, in Dahab, Egypt, with Freedive Dahab - www.freedivedahab.com (SSI and AIDA school). I go there every year and it is the best freediving spot I've been to for training, by far. Courses/training run daily, it's very well organised, a lot of freedivers go there, you can learn a lot, and the Blue Hole is just so protected and majestic it is freediving heaven! All you have to do is walk from shore and you are in very deep, blue, warm waters with a good reef. Here are a few photos: http://bit.ly/obdvql

If you go to SEA:
- If you are hooked with Thailand and want to go back there, you should check Blue Immersion (http://www.blue-immersion.com) in Koh Tao, Akim is a really good freediver (diving 100+, he used to live in Dahab) and running SSI and AIDA courses almost all year long. I went to Koh Tao and found it good, although I would prefer to be able to go freediving straight from the shore without having to go out on a boat.
- Moalboal, Philippines, is sensational! For depth training For fun freediving and exploring reefs, diving with turtles, you can't beat Moalboal. There's a reef with a great drop off 50m from shore, with depth ranging from 30m to 50-60m right there. If you swim another 100m you are in 70+. And the reef is so alive it is mind blowing! Plus the locals are super friendly. Here are a few photos: http://bit.ly/pyeHQZ. Wolfgang runs courses there: http://www.freediving-philippines.com.

Enjoy your holiday!
