We want to travel in indonesia this year and would love to see some dugongs. We werre in the Solomon Islands last year but we missed them. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Foolish E

There are very few places that will sell themselves on the basis of sighting dugongs. This is due I suppose to their unpredicatble movements.

I have seen them around islands where there are sea grass beds in the Komodo National Park and a Komodo Liveaboard is one way of going on what you know will be an excellent dive cruise but still giving yourself a chance (albeit small) of spotting some dugongs.

The only other place where there is a good chance is Mantanani off the coast of Sabah, Malaysia. The season tends to be very short however and starts and ends with the sudden arrival and equally sudden departure of the star of the show. Again if you plan a trip to Malaysia to dive Sipadan or Layang Layang and leave yourself a few days at the right time of year for Mantanani then you could be in luck.
