I did a couple wreck dives just off the coast of Tripoli in '09 with Mohamed Arebi. Great guy doing absolutely the best he can given the circumstances. The situation at that time was that we had to be sneaky and avoid using the main harbor and his big boat because it was illegal to dive without a permit yet impossible to get a permit, (such is the Libyan way). I seriously doubt any opening of "Water Gates" has happened or will be happening in Libya any time soon but if you are one of the many expats there, it is worth giving Mr. Arebi a call to see if he'll take you out.

| aljawal12:39 UTC29 May 2010 | Dears, Along the 1950Km of sea coast you have many archeological sites (greek and roman) that were built BC afront of the sea cost. But, in the last 2000years, the sea has advanced on the land and these sites have seen a series of earthquakes, what has lead a part of this villages to sink under the blue water. Here are some sites names: West Libya: Leptus Magna, Sebrata.... East Libya: Tocherus, Ptolemus, Apolonia, Lathrun.... To facilite things, go to google earth and you'll find many sites on the sea-coast feet: there are no spaces between these site and the sea, what means the boarders of these sites are "INSIDE" the sea.
Regarding permission for diving, I'm a member of Almilaha Diving Center (Well know diving center in Benghazi and approved worldwide). Any dive permission can be given via this center, also the diving guide and diving tools. for more info e-mail me: newnajem@hotmail.com ...

| klaush20:23 UTC02 Jun 2010 | This is interesting.
Are there also any wrecks of war ships, tanks, planes etc. from the Germans or British?
How about minefields from WW 2... is it safe to dive, or do people occasionally get blown up by Rommel's old minefields?

| laurieloo8215:35 UTC15 Jun 2010 | Are you able to sponsor tourist visas Mr. Aljawal? If not, you are subject to expats in Libya on business only. Tourist visas are not just available to independent travellers as we both know.

| aljawal11:30 UTC22 Jun 2010 | Hi Klaush, The eastern part, especialy Tobruk side, is full of war wrecks on its land. Regarding the see, you should make your own research to know if there is any sinked baot in the war. Once you find it, it will be easier to find it. I guess that no one plane has been shot above the sea cost.
Hi again Laurie :) Once you are with the real libyan in Libya, especialy in the eastern part, you will be able to do whatever you want... It's our Libya :) Trust me, don't beleive all what the rules says... we like to limit the visits to the country, otherways said, we filter the tourism. If you want to come independantly you have to present (and paying) for 4 persons visa. Once you get the stamp on your passport, you'll be able to come alone. Once you arrive to the bled, a tour guide will drive you wherever you want. From one hand, I was working as a tour guide&organiser. I left it for other business. But I still have my contacts. From another side, I'm a spearfisher by my-self and membership of Milaha Diving center in Benghazi.
