Hi folks,

I'm a happy non-certified fun-diver, but have taken a few dives over the years. My experience tells me that some of the most hailed spots in the world are disappointing and I've had a few dives in relatively unknown diving spots that were fantastic (like Turkey and Vietnam). So, my question is, how's diving in Nicaragua? I was thinking of combining it with a relaxing stay at the Corn Islands, but I'm open to suggestions. As for my preferences, unspoiled (if such still exists), large(r) marine life. Any tips??

Thanks,

Bigskies

Hi Bigskies,

I was diving there back in 2005 (Little Corn Island) at that time there was only one dive shop but it had a great set up with international instructors and dive masters. They're staight on the beach where the boat from Big Corn Island lands to drop off passengers and supplies.

You could always head north to Honduras and take in the Bay Islands.........

Which ever, you'll love it..........

By the way, what exactly is a NON-CERTIFIED fun-diver?

That's a new one on me...............

if you are looking for a relaxed out of the way place then Corn islands are definitely it. i think Big corn has a much more relaxed vibe, i preffered diving with them as well. only one shop, good ppl. besides nurse sharks not a lot of macro stuff, one really good dive an hour away with awesome eagle rays. costs a bit more but totally worth it. little corn worth checking out, but much busier and more like roatan which feels a bit like a dive factory. when are u going?

HI, thanks for the replies! And that's exactly what I meant, Maxym ;-) I did get my open water something at one time.... but never got around to studying for PADI's on holiday, and in Holland the water's cold... so I'm what I like to call a Sunday-diver (since in Holland we call people Sunday-drivers if they drive like they only use the car on Sundays). I'm not a hard-core anything... but I like the fish. Thanks for the reply, and I will check out Big Corn, I think... depends on the sounds we here about crime there (on the internet it's not very good, so I'll try the local info. in Nicaragua... unless you guys have info.?)

Happy travels ;-)

when i was there power was out for most of the time, so it was dark and bit scary at nite, i didnt wlak around at nite. a friend of mine did quite a bit and had no problems. if you are staying with the diveshop that do have a nice place and a good restaurant then you should not worry about crime at all. if you can aford it, fly, the boat is not realy cheaper if you factor in hotels and food, and you loose so much time, i took it on way in and flew back. it sounds romantic but is just tedious
hope you have a great time with the Pirate (our nickname for the shop owner)
