Im going to mexico to dive in july for 3 months (padi course , established dive instructor) am just a beginner with none of my own equipment, so i am going to invest in the basics setup for the trip, wetsuit fins etc etc

im coming from the uk,going via newyork for a few days, where should i buy my gear? is it cheaper out in mexico, or the us or should i just take with me?

I would wait at least till you go diving to start choosing equipment- even the basics. You have to invest in stuff that is right for you and not necessarily the cheapest or the most expensive stuff- I would ask the dive shop that you are going to learn with their advice as they will be able to tell you how readily avaliable the major brands are and what the choice is. They will also be able to give you better advice on what will work for you.

Usually at the shop where you are taking classes, you can get all your gear at a pretty good discount. Call them up ahead of time and ask them to reccomend and quote you a basic kit (suit, fins, mask, BC, console, computer).
