I'm going to Malta in March and would like to do some diving. I'm a good swimmer, but have not done any diving.

Where (and with who) should I start certification, here in Ottawa, Canada, or is there a benefit to wait until I get to Malta?

Hi Jeff,

It is always nice to be certified before you go, that way you can start just enjoying diving when you get there without any pressure.

Kanata Diving Supply has a great team of instructors and are just off Eaglson Rd in Kanata. They do the course open water dives at Prescott which will give you some experience in light current. The water is still fairly warm right now so you shouldn't have a problem there. Bob and Pam Curzon run the shop and are great.

Good luck and enjoy !!!! Whatever your decision.

I agree with what nojuan said. Get certified with a few dives under your belt before you go, then you can just start diving when you get to Malta.

I found diving on reefs to be a cakewalk after doing my certification dives in West Hawk Lake in early June.

Third to agree. You don't want to spend your time in a classroom or pool when on vacation. Better to support your local dive shop and get it done at home before you go.
