Hello, am looking at a trip to alor and just wanting to know if the impression i've got of the place and its marine life through internet web sites /searches is spot on.. Have searched the previous posts here and followed every link possible so consider myself vaguely informed on the subject, but just want to get an idea if reality will match. So if anyones been there, feel free to respond..
My impressions - Whilst historically visited for pelagic sites, alor sites in general have a history (like most places with currents ) of being 'on or off' in terms of pelagic action. Most negative info i have read about alor rates the lack of expected pelagic action as a reason for disappointment. Just as many websites rave about it though, so i think those negative reports are a few sour grapes from disappointed pelagic nuts..All of this this doesnt bother me, will happily take my chances there in relation to the big stuff..
What really interests me is the macro life, which seems to be a recent'ish' discovery and hence not as well documented on the internet - anyone got an opinion on this? From my understanding, kalabahi harbour and the channel out to the strait has black volcanic sandy bottom sites where all sorts of wonderful critters are found, also the island of pura and ternate have good spots too, do any of the other sites in the pantar strait have good macro life, or is the current too big / sites not sheltered enough for the small stuff to exist there? I'm aware that there are roughly 30 dive sites to choose from in the strait so would expect a bit of variation between them in terms of life/depth/topography etc.
I'm a keen photographer, and whilst i like pelagic action my main reason for visiting this area is the macro potential it seems to show, hence my post.
Am considering staying with alor divers on pantar as have heard only good things about them, anyone got experience with this place? I'm aware of the 3 other dive operators in the area but have read mixed reviews about each of them ( but then again, stay in business for more than a year and youre bound to have a negative report somewhere on the internet!!)
I'd love to hear opinions form anyone whos been here, as from my research this area shows some real potential as a fantastic macro / critter / weird marine life dive location, its just hard to separate 'fact from swindle' on the internet at times.
