Hi,

I am looking at doing a diving course in Egypt this summer. I learnt to dive (SSI advanced) in Australia five years ago but haven't dived since. I'm likely to go by myself (I am trying to convince friends but its probably too expensive for them), so I looked on Vida Loca Travel to find some other people to go with. I found some Active Adventures course listed on there that look really good - but as I my only diving experience is in Australia and I've seen some bad reviews of other companies on the forums here, I wanted to check that they are good - does anyone have any experience with them?

One more question, please excuse my ignorance here - would I be able to dive straight away with my SSI card?

Thanks,

Tom

What kind of diving course are you planning to do? Assuming that SSI works similarly to PADI, the next courses would be rescue diver and / or various specialities, all of which you can easily do at any dive shop in Egypt. For the PADI rescue course, you need a minimum of 20 logged dives and personally I think one shouldn't do it until one has some experience and feels really comfortable in the water.

Your SSI card will be recognised by dives shops, but since you haven't dived in 5 years you will most likely be asked to do a refresher course.

No idea about Vida Loca and Active Adventures, but if your main reason for wanting to join such a group is fear of not meeting people, I can assure you that if you go to Dahab for your diving, you will very easily find other people and have lots of fun without

First thing you should do is hit up your local dive shop and do a refresher course (organization,PADI, NAUI, SSI, does not matter). Then head out for a day of local diving just to get your sea-legs back on. Check out THIS SITE if you are worried about finding a diving partner on your trip. I don't understand why people want to travel to an exotic destination just to do a course. Wouldn't you rather be diving and having fun rather than sitting in a class room?

Matter of taste, I guess. I very much prefered lounging on some cushion by the sea, reading my PADI manual, and doing the confined water training etc. in a nice setting in nice company, than to have done it at home. To me this has never felt like a waste of holiday time, and the time you actually spend in the classroom is minimal.
